TradeWinds understands the man was shot as up to a dozen pirates attempted to board the 281,000-dwt Kalamos (built 2000) off Bonny.
Several other crew are thought to have been hurt. The dead man was either the chief engineer or first officer.
Greek manager Aeolos Management told TradeWinds no one could respond to enquiries about the incident until tomorrow.
The Platts news agency cited a director from Indian refiner BPCL, the tanker's charterer, as saying three crew have been taken hostage.
AIS data records the vessel’s last position on 2 February off the coast of Nigeria.
The tanker is believed to be part-laden with a 1m-barrel cargo from Akpo. It was bound for Qua Iboe to lift another 950,000 barrels of crude when the attack took place.
Nigeria’s security agency has retaken the vessel and were conducting an investigation on Wednesday.
